How to Replace a Keyboard Key on a Sony Vaio PCG-K

A guide to repairing your laptop or notebook's keyboard

Last updated April 30th, 2008

Yes, it is possible to replace individual keys on your laptop's keyboard! Note that the same laptop model can have several different types of hinge mechanisms under the key. Some colors in the pictures may differ for your model. That is fine, what matters most is the shape of the hinge piece.

Step 1: Orient the hinge
The plastic hinge mechanism must be oriented as shown for it to fit into the metal keyboard hooks.

Step 2: Hook the hinge onto the base
Hook the two bottom plastic tabs of the hinge under the bottom metal hooks on the base of the keyboard. Slide the hinge about halfway into the hooks. Try not to slide the hinge all the way under the hooks yet, we'll do that in the next step.

Step 3: Secure the hinge into place
Flatten the hinge by pressing down on it. While it is flat, slide the entire hinge down so that the top inner tabs of the hinge also lock into place. The top right and left inner tabs of the plastic hinge should be hooked under the metal hooks protruding from the base of the keyboard on each side. You can now check that the hinge works properly by pressing down on it a few times.

Step 4: Press the key into place
Align the key on top of its place on the keyboard, and press down evenly. All four corners of the key should click into place.
