How to Replace a Type K02 Keyboard Key

This guide is for models using hinge type K02.  This hinge type is used in the following models:

Some colors in the pictures may differ for your model. That is fine, what matters most is the shape of the hinge piece.

Step 1: Orient the hinge

The plastic hinge mechanism must be oriented as shown for it to fit onto the metal keyboard hooks.

Step 2: Hook the hinge onto the base

Hook the bottom edge of the hinge over the bottom two metal hooks on the base of the keyboard.

Step 3: Secure the hinge into place

Snap the top of the hinge into place, one side at a time. This may take a bit of pressure. In this example, the top right side is being secured first. The top right and left sides of the plastic hinge should be clipped between the two metal notches protruding from the base of the keyboard on each side. You can now check that the hinge works by flexing it up and down; it should pivot easily at its axis.

Step 4: Place the rubber spring piece

If your keyboard is missing the rubber spring piece, place it in the center of the hinge. It will be held in place by the surrounding key and hinge.

Step 5: Press the key into place

Align the key on top of its place on the keyboard, and press down evenly. All four corners of the key should click into place.

Yippee! My down arrow key had come loose with the hinge still attached to it. Finding this page let me relize that I could remove it attach it first then push the key on.

Fixed mine great! (Had to change from type-k04 to k03 then k02 to find the right keyboard in the address bar.)

Also, the up down orientation could be clearer. It didn’t snap on till I flipped it over.

Hoping there is a guide out there to help me fix my Compaq V2000 keyboard. The spacebar key just came off. It’s not broken or anything. I just need help on snapping it back into place. Please help!

My key came off with the hinge still attached to it too, like cmorcat. How do I remove the hinge from the key top without breaking it? I can’t see an obvious place to snap it off. A photo would help too, if possible.
I have an HP Pavilion dv6 laptop. Thank you.

      Hi Susie,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, I was trying to get some pictures for you. This first one shows what the connection points might look like.

The second shows how I would remove the hinge. You can use a small flathead screwdriver or something similar. Insert it underneath the hinge as close to a connection point as you can. Then gently pry up until the hinge comes off.

      I hope this helps!

        Julie, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
I was so afraid of prying off the hinge, but I used a small flathead screwdriver, just like you said. It came off before I knew it and I snapped in onto the key board key hooks, pressed the key top on and it’s great. The pictures were very helpful. I really appreciate you and your help.
